The Curry Creek Cloggers Club was started in September 1985 by Clara Perry. Ms Perry taught line dancing at the Bay Indies Resort in Venice, FL.
In the summer of 1985, while Ms. Perry was vacationing, she learned to clog dance. When she returned to line dancing that fall, she started a new class in clog dancing at Bay Indies Resort. 16 of her line dancers signed up; 11 women and 5 men. Clyde, a retired banker, suggested the name of Curry Creek because Curry Creek flows through the back of the resort property. And so the Curry Creek Cloggers were born! Ms. Perry continued to teach the group until 1988 when Louise King and Fay Deroian took over the instruction.
The group performs regularly at the Venice Friendship Center, during the snow bird season. They dance upon request at various other locations. The group's focus is on participation. They dance for fun and exercise. They dance to a wide variety of music getting choreography from Clogging Workshops, the Internet and other individuals.
The classes are held at the Senior Friendship Center (location below) on Tuesday afternoons 3 to 4:30 and Thursday afternoons 2 to 4. Thursday afternoon 2 to 2:30 is a time for beginners. New dancers are always welcome.
